Three Steps to a Happier Monday

Before we dive into a new week, let’s pause and ask ourselves some simple questions to reflect on where we’ve been, get excited about something today and set an intention for the week ahead.

GRATITUDE: What are three things I appreciated from the weekend?

TODAY: What’s one thing I can be excited about today?

INTENTION: What is my intention for this week?

For me, I’m thankful kindness and support from colleagues as I wrapped up my last day, catching up with dear friends Saturday and Ben’s easygoing nature. Today, I’m most excited to have a ‘reset day’ and get things in order around the house. And my intention for the week is to embrace this being a week of transitions.

Okay, your turn! And if you want to share, I am all ears. 🙂

Monday Musings: March Goals & Intentions

Living in the Midwest, I’m always hesitant to label March as “spring.” But the truth is, there is change happening around me. I’m seeing little signs of the new season on its way.

The days are longer (yay! Even though losing that hour of sleep always feels rough). I’m starting to see little buds pop up in our yard. It’s my first spring in our house, so I can’t wait to see what they turn into. Daffodils? Tulips? And while I can’t rule out a freezing day or two (or ten), I also know there will be those perfect spring days sprinkled in.

So, seasonal change is afoot. And some change is happening for me too.

…I got a new job!

I finished my last day at my current company on Friday.

I know – a bit unexpected. Especially with my “word of the year” being LITTLE, meant to symbolize no big changes. And yet… here we are! A big change.

Here’s what happened: a few weeks ago, I was approached by a former colleague – someone I always really enjoyed working with and admire – about a role at her company.

I’ve been at my current company for almost ten years. I started as an intern in July 2016, was hired full-time in March 2017, and moved into a specialized consulting group in 2021. I feel incredibly grateful for the time I’ve had there. I’ve learned so much! When I graduated college with a degree in public relations, I didn’t yet know what area of the field I wanted to focus on. Over the years, that clarity came into focus. Now I can confidently say that internal communications, change communications and change management are what I do – what I love to do.

At the same time, I’ve always been curious about gaining “in-house” experience – working within one company and focusing on their communications, rather than consulting for many different organizations.

My experience so far has been entirely on the agency side, so when an opportunity to step into an in-house internal communications role came up, it felt worth exploring. I went through the application and interview process, and the more I learned about the role, the more it felt like the right opportunity for me.

I found out I got the job the same week I returned to work after maternity leave – gulp! Talk about wild timing. But my current company was very understanding, and the resounding reaction I got from colleagues was that this was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. How lucky am I to have support like that?

So, I wrapped up my role on Friday and will start my new job a week from today! I’m excited to share more about it once I’ve officially begun.

March is going to be a busy transitional month because of this, so I want to give myself space to mentally clear my head before starting something new and enjoy a little time off in between jobs. Here are my intentions for the month:

March Goals & Intentions

+ Finish my last days at my job. Done! I spent the past two weeks transferring files, sharing key project information and exchanging contact info with colleagues.

+ Intentionally mark the transition between jobs. I have this week to do so and am picturing some journaling and a little decluttering of my home office.

+ Start the new job. I haven’t started a new job in a long time, so I’m definitely a little nervous – but also very excited.

+ Plan for Ben’s baptism and lunch. Ben will be baptized next month, and we’ll host family at our house for lunch afterward. I want to get some of the planning underway now.

+ Start solids with Ben. We’re already beginning this adventure, and it’s been so fun so far!

+ Begin creating Ben’s 0–6 month photo book. I have so, so, so many pictures of Ben and am slightly terrified of losing them or not being able to find them later. My idea is to create a simple photo book from just born to six months, and then another from six to twelve months to document his first year. I’d like to start creating the first book this month.

+ Track spending daily. March is a month that always makes me think about taking a closer look at finances (maybe it’s the color green?). I already do monthly tracking, but this month I want to get into the habit of checking in daily.

What are you looking forward to this March?
